VOLUNTEERS from the West Country branch of the Inland Waterways Association have been leading working parties to clear litter along the banks of local rivers and canals.

The group holds regular events alongside the footpaths and towpaths on the River Tone, the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal and the Grand Western Canal.

Sometimes, volunteers in boats and kayaks are able to take to the water to collect rubbish that finds its way into our waterways.

Taunton Deane Borough Council gives its support with the loan of tools and equipment, including hi-viz tabards and cleansing contractor idVerde collects and disposes of the waste bags, which are left neatly stacked in pre-arranged locations.

These bagfuls of litter can sometimes be seen beside the river and canals awaiting collection after a weekend litter pick.

Your County Gazette is delighted to highlight its work as part of the new anti-litter campaign launched with the borough council last week.

Volunteers are always welcome at the litter picks and are advised to wear old clothes and sturdy boots or shoes, and to bring a drink and something to eat.

Any under-18s who wish to attend will need to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult for the duration of the event.

Some members of staff from the Tesco Taunton store join the volunteers when they organise events in the French Weir area and, at one event, the store offered a bacon roll and coffee to all volunteers as an added incentive.

Mike Slade, from the Inland Waterways Association, said: “These litter picks are a regular event for the local IWA, which is committed to keeping the paths around our waterways in Taunton Deane clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.

“We could not do this without the continued support of the council and volunteers.”

Cllr Patrick Berry, executive councillor for environmental services, said: “The council really values efforts like this and is happy to offer support.

“It is wonderful to see community groups taking pride in the area and I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in these regular activities.”
