DAISY Davies has just returned to her home in Somerset after winning the XTERRA Short Track series triathlon race in Italy last weekend.

Competing against 50 of the top athletes in the world, the 20 year old , who was one of the youngest taking part, dominated the race that involved a 400 metre swim in Molveno Lake, an eight kilometre off road cycle race with jumps and hills and plenty of mud followed by a three kilometre run.

Daisy is a sporting all rounder and when she was younger was a member of the team that won the Lady Taverners Girls Under 13 cricket title and became involved with triathlon almost by accident.

“A few years ago- probably back in 2014 my dad found a local triathlon at Langport which I entered and really enjoyed doing and its just gone on from there, ” Daisy said.

After completing her schooling for the past two years Daisy has been training at Bath University part time with the British Triathlon squad, and also working part time as a life guard at a local sport centre.

How does her victory in Italy rank alongside any other of her achievements to date?

“Its right up there with quite a good race out in Canada in July as part of the British Triathlon Team out there in the relay where we were second.”

What lies ahead for the 20 year old?

“In November I have got the Word Under 23 championships out in Abu Dhabi, where we will be competing in temperatures of 30 degrees, then next year I am hoping to progress onto the British Lottery funded programme for the Olympics in 2024 out in Paris, so there is plenty to look forward to and work for.”

Daisy’s, grandfather the late Tony Davies, was a stalwart member of Taunton Cricket Club for many years, during which he played for Somerset Second XI ,before becoming a founder member and the first chairman of the Somerset Cricket Association when it was formed in 1995.
