A Somerset charity has raised over £125,000 to support older people living in fuel poverty.
Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has achieved this feat in just over a month after launching their Surviving Winter appeal, thanks to the support of local people.
Today, nearly 10,000 older people in Somerset, almost twice the number last year, are experiencing fuel poverty, indicating they have to make the tough decision between heating or eating.
The funds raised will provide necessary support to elderly residents in Somerset who are currently unable to keep their homes warm.
Grants of up to £500 are already being rapidly distributed throughout the county.
These funds ensure that the most vulnerable people in Somerset stay warm, safe, and healthy in the face of plummeting temperatures and rising energy bills.
SCF's philanthropy director, Laura Blake said: "We’ve been astounded by the magnitude of support we’ve received for the Surviving Winter appeal so far this year, particularly in light of the cost-of-living crisis.
"This year the demand is greater than ever before, and a record number of older people now need our help to cope with the bitter winter months ahead.
"We’re incredibly grateful for every single donation we’ve received – without your support, we know lots of older people in Somerset would be suffering in silence during these long, cold winter months."
The SCF is aiming to raise £175,000 which will ensure around 800 vulnerable older residents in Somerset will have the support they need.
