The Somerset Council-commissioned West of England Centre for Inclusive Living (WECIL) has been tasked with improving disabled living in the county.

The project has identified challenges faced by the disabled community via a targeted survey, as well as educating community businesses and organisations about physical accessibility and attitudinal barriers.

As part of the final phase, WECIL revealed plans for a series of consultations with the Transport Plan Development team.

These meetings will focus on tackling key travel issues identified by the disabled community, such as public transportation and parking difficulties.

Four two-hour consultations have been planned between the Transport Development Team and WECIL's Access and Inclusion Team.

These consultations will concentrate on four main areas: active travel and public realm, parking and electric vehicles, taxis, and public transport.

This team has members experienced in auditing accessibility, with a variety of impairments that will help to bring real-world insights into the discussions.

WECIL, supported by survey feedback, displays confidence that such meetings will pave the way to impactful changes for Somerset's disabled community.

The team are eager to involve disabled individuals at an early stage in the planning process, leading to accessible transportation for all, hence making Somerset a more inclusive place.
