One year on from the unveiling of the dragon sculpture in Taunton town centre, it's safe to say the reaction remains quite mixed.

The High Street's towering dragon, as much loved by some as it is loathed by others, was unveiled a year ago on February 11.

It was created through a partnership between local businesses, the community, and the former Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT).

The sculpture — standing four metres tall and costing £15,000 — has stirred up conversation amongst locals, residents and County Gazette readers alike.

One sceptical resident said: "The dragon was a total waste of taxpayers' money and has not improved Taunton whatsoever".

Another agreed, pointing to the economic hardship many face: "It's a great addition but it's money spent at the wrong time, especially when families are struggling."

Some even questioned whether it should have been erected across the border: "It belongs in Wales, not Taunton!".

Despite the negative comments, there are still many that find the dragon to be adding character to the town.

A local explained: "These pieces of interest provide talking points, selfie backgrounds, memorable moments.

"It might seem insignificant to some but it makes our town stand out from another".

The positivity does not end there, as one art-admiring individual said: "It is the best arts and culture feature in Taunton", while another asserted: "I love it, it is absolutely beautiful".

A County Gazette reader commented: "Definitely a great focal point for the town centre and its a stunning example of what art can bring to a town.

"A brilliant addition and well done to all who made this possible"

Positive or negative, there's no denying the dragon has made an impression in Taunton, Somerset and beyond.
