Somerset has been named as the worst area in the South West for domestic abuse.

That is according to a new study conducted by Personal Injury Claims UK.

Research highlighted that approximately 60 domestic abuse crimes were occurring daily between November 2022 and October 2023 in Avon and Somerset.

This accounted for 12 per cent of all reported crimes in the district.

According to Avon & Somerset Police, the majority of victims were female at 68 per cent, with males representing 26 per cent.

While six per cent of victims had other gender definitions or the gender was unknown.

A total of 21,761 incidents were reported last year in the South West alone.

Somerset County Gazette:

The figures from the study were obtained from Freedom of Information requests sent to every police force across the UK.

Charities have been voicing their concerns over the dire situations faced by victims and also the services supporting them, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.

Andrea Simon, director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW) said: "Survivors and the services that support them are continuing to feel the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and budgetary cuts which have seen life-saving specialist support services struggle to meet demand."
